SDR at a SaaS company: the Loom teardown
The situation: You're applying for an SDR role at Rotawise, a made-up company that sells shift-scheduling software to clinics with more than one location. You have no sales title. You spent four years running front desk at a dental office.
The message that gets ignored
Subject: SDR application
Hi Priya,
I'm excited to apply for the SDR position at Rotawise. I'm a hard-working, motivated professional with strong communication skills and a passion for technology. In my current role I work closely with patients and staff every day, and I'm confident those skills would transfer well to sales.
I'd love to hop on a quick call to learn more about the role and share how I could contribute to the team.
Thanks for your time, Marcus
The work-first version
Subject: How I'd open a clinic manager for Rotawise
Hi Priya,
I ran the front desk at a three-location dental group for four years. I built the staff schedule by hand every Sunday night, so I know the problem Rotawise solves from the buyer's side.
I recorded a 3-minute Loom walking through your homepage the way a clinic office manager would read it, plus the cold email and call opener I'd use on that person: [link]
If it's close to how your team prospects, I'd like to talk about the SDR role.
Marcus
The finished thing is a short Loom, labeled "Mock outreach, made for my Rotawise application." In it, Marcus:
- Scrolls the Rotawise homepage and points out the one line an office manager cares about (covering a sick call before 7 a.m.) and where it's buried.
- Names the buyer he'd target first: the office manager at a group with two to five locations, because that's the person who builds the schedule.
- Reads the five-line cold email he'd send that person, out loud.
- Says the first 20 seconds of the cold call he'd make.
That's it. No slides. No logo use that suggests a partnership.
What the reader sees in 10 seconds
The ignored one: - "Hard-working, motivated, passionate." Every applicant says this. I can't check any of it. - "Quick call" before giving me a reason to take one. - Nothing about Rotawise or our buyer.
The work-first one: - He knows who our buyer is because he was that buyer. - There's a link. I can see him prospect in three minutes without scheduling anything. - He picked a real target persona and wrote the email. That's the SDR job. - The ask comes after the work and it's small.
The fix, in one line
Stop describing your skills and record yourself using them on their buyer.
Your turn
Pick one SaaS company you'd apply to today. Open their homepage and find the one sentence their buyer cares about most. Then record a Loom of three minutes or less: who you'd target first and why, the cold email you'd send that person, and how you'd open the call. Label it as mock outreach for your application. Write the four-line message that goes with it. Send it before you build anything else.
